ARCADIA, Fla.- WINK News confirms through family members, 14 year old Melvin Hearns died Friday afternoon, the victim of a drive by shooting in Arcadia.
Melvin was in a car when deputies say someone opened fire.
The driver lost control, ran over a speed limit sign and slammed into a fence.
Another man in the car was seriously injured
Family members say the wounds from losing Melvin, are still too fresh to talk about on camera.
But did want to tell WINK News, Melvin was a sweet and fun teenager.
He played quarterback for the Punta Gorda Charlotte Warriors, and was good in school.
"First thing you are thinking is it's your child, wow, in your yard."
Only WINK News spoke to the woman, who owns the home the boys crashed into.
For her own safety, she didn't want to show her face on camera.
She was out running errands when the wild scene unfolded.
"I got a hundred phone calls on the way back, that there were bodies in my yard."
As Melvin's family grieves, deputies are now racing to find the shooter, who took off.
"I'm scared. That they may come back and retaliate."
Family members confirm the boy seriously injured was Melvin's cousin.
He was shot in the leg, but is expected to be okay.
A third man was in the car, but uninjured. He was questioned by deputies.
Detectives are looking for a black sedan.
