TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Prosecutors would be able to enhance charges on a felony burglary suspect who crosses a county line to commit a crime under a measure passed by the Senate.
The bill (HB 427) addresses so-called "pillowcase burglars" who target homes near major highways across county lines and stash their take in pillowcases before fleeing. It passed with a 25 to 15 vote.
Felony burglary charges could be increased by one degree if it can be proven that the purpose of the trip was to elude law enforcement or prevent authorities from tracking stolen goods.
The measure was introduced last year on behalf of Martin County Sheriff and former state Rep. William Snyder, who says his department has been besieged by cross-county criminals.
