PANAMA CITY, Fla. (AP) - A Florida Panhandle man faces life in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend.

A Bay County jury found 41-year-old Joseph Moody guilty Thursday of first-degree murder, which carries a mandatory life sentence.

Authorities say Moody fatally shot 24-year-old Megan Pettis in March 2013 as she was driving out of a Panama City shopping center parking lot. She sustained three gunshot wounds to the head. A group of bystanders beat and subdued Moody until police arrived.

Moody admitted to killing Pettis but testified that his actions weren't premeditated. He claimed he had gone to confront Pettis and then kill himself in front of her. He said he was in a daze when he began shooting at her.

The Panama City News Herald (http://goo.gl/UYH2rD ) reports that Moody might have received a lighter sentence if jurors had convicted him of second-degree murder.
