COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.- Two homes in Golden Gate, a lavish house in Naples, and two mansions inside gated communities. WINK News is uncovering all five home invasions happened Monday through Thursday, when security experts say the victims were more likely to be home.
Their guards down," said Mark Gabel, owner of Safe and Sound. "They're relaxing, watching tv, eating dinner or just hanging out."
"They like people to be home because there's more opportunity to get into a safe if there's one, to get jewelry or things that people carry on them," said Lt. John Morrisseau with the Collier County Sheriff's Office.
WINK News was the first station to show you this surveillance video last week from one of those home invasions. And only WINK News has exclusive video of a special home invasion task force searching off Golden Gate Parkway Wednesday night. An off-duty deputy spotted a suspicious white van at the Grey Oaks community sparking this major scene. In the end, nothing was found. But it shows just how seriously deputies are taking the crime spree.
"Because most communities have some type of video or guard at the gate, we assume they're coming in on foot" said Lt. John Morrisseau.
The Collier County Sheriff's Office tells WINK News, they've checked with agencies across the state and at this point, these suspects only appear to be targeting Collier.
"We don't know where this is going to go, right now it seems like its a Collier County issue, but it may spread," said Lt. John Morrisseau.
Deputies advise residents to lock your doors and activate your alarm system when you're inside your home.
The task force created to catch those crooks is made up of 15 people from different agencies including the FBI and FDLE. So far, they've received 31 tips.
