CAPE CORAL, Fla.- Dive teams search for hours for a missing teenager, who police say jumped into a Cape Coral canal Wednesday afternoon. They're looking for 19-year old Erik Sanchez.

Friends say Sanchez wanted to hurt himself when he jumped into the canal off Mohawk Parkway and never surfaced.

Now there are new questions about where Sanchez is. During the search, police showed a picture of Sanchez to neighbors and one woman did confirm that she saw the teen running through her backyard.

Sanchez's aunt and his grandmother told WINK News that he was depressed. Sanchez's friends told police he was suicidal and that's why they got worried when they saw him jump into the canal.

Please Erik call the police, call somebody that can help you, that's why we are here. We love you” said Virginia Perez, who is Sanchez's grandmother.

Friends say Sanchez dove into the canal and when he it didn't come up, they jumped in to try to find him, and neighbors ran to help. “I had my wife get some life jackets and throwing devices out in case the kids were trying to find the body or something” said Billy Young.

Dive crews spent hours underwater looking for Sanchez but never found him. His family tells WINK News they're desperate for him to come home. Sanchez's aunt Virgina Perez said “we're here for him, hes not in trouble or i don't want him to think hes in trouble we just want to help him.”

Michael Heeder with the Cape Coral Fire Department said divers are confident that Sanchez is not in that water. But the question remains, where is he now?

Perez said “he's a very good kid,. He's 19 years old, he has his whole life ahead of him and we want to make sure that he gets the help that he deserves and needs.”

Aviation search from the Lee County Sheriff's Office and K9s from the Cape Coral Police Department are being used to assist the search.
