LEE COUNTY, FL  - Some major water projects that will someday ease the effects of large water releases each year from Lake Okechobee are on hold for now. Reports on those projects from the Army Corps of Engineers are not complete on some of those projects and are not expected to be submitted until sometime this summer. That means funding for those projects will be delayed as well. Local lawmakers and environmentalists say the focus now needs to turn to short term solutions, while the long term issues and funding are worked out. Fort Myers Beach town councilman, Alan Mandel has suggested tepmorary resevoirs like Babcock ranch as alternatives, while experts continue to work on viable plans to one day solve the Lake Okechobee water release problem.
