LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A woman who went on the run with her boyfriend accused of killing his family will not go to prison. WINK News has learned Joycelin Luck will testify against Steven Tompkins, if his case goes to trial.
Tompkins is accused of beating his mother Shelley to death and shooting and killing his brother Daniel.
Tompkins family members want to see justice, and call the plea deal 'bittersweet.'
They want to know why, and what happened that December day, and hope Luck may finally be able to tell them.
Handcuffed, and in an orange jumpsuit, Joycelin Luck agreed to 5 years of probation, and to testify against her boyfriend Steven Tompkins.
Tompkin's cousin tells WINK News over the phone the family wants justice. "It's kind of a victory that she is going to testify against him. Maybe some things will come to light that otherwise we wouldn't of been aware of," said Brandy Sullivan.
Investigators say last December, Tompkins brutally killed his mother Shelly and brother Daniel inside their Lehigh Acres home, took off, and picked up Luck, his online girlfriend, in South Carolina.
After a week on the run, deputies found them thousands of miles away in Wyoming.
Luck's defense attorney Wilbur Smith tells WINK News Luck was simply a woman in love, through an online romance.
"Her involvement was purely on the internet, she wasn't involved in the murders whatsoever. She was committed to this guy. She now recognizes how unintelligent it was that she did this," said Smith.
Steven Tompkins appears in court again the end of May, and he's still waiting for trial. As for luck, She'll be placed on probation for 5 years and if she violates it, will end up back behind bars.
