SANIBEL, Fla.,- A joke between husband and wife got so out of hand, that police got involved! A couple is doing construction on their new home on Sanibel, but kept hitting delay after delay. So as a joke, the husband typed up a legitimate-looking news release from the city, and sent it to his wife saying they could not be build!
"it was suppose to be between me and him. It was a wife and husband joke, that was it, between the two of us."
A simple joke that made it's way into the hands of other people, And sparked a police investigation. Now, the soon-to- be Sanibel residents are devastated at the chaos it caused.
"We're so excited to finally be able to be there and I messed it up."
The couple asked us not to use their names, but this is a copy of that "mock" press release that the husband sent to his wife. It looks like an official release from the City of Sanibel and says the city is putting an immediate ban on all new building permits in order to protect the sea turtles.
"He did a silly thing and shot it to me. I said 'you better tell me this is not real?' and he said 'it's not real.'"
What is real is the fact that there has been a significant delay in the construction of their new home, so the husband wanted to make light of a frustrating situation.
"I sent to it my builder saying this is not real, but is funny, because we have all been waiting."
But the builder missed the note saying the release was fake and called the city to ask about the supposed ban.
"It was between the two of us and then all the sudden I find out I am forwarded to the police and there is an open case on us!"
The wife is heartbroken knowing this joke got so out of control.
"I love the conservation foundation, we are donors there, we meant nothing, no disrespect."
The Sanibel police chief says no charges will be filed and there is no ban on building permits, it was all a joke!
