COLLIER COUNTY, Fla., - An exploratory oil well in Collier County is coming under fire.  Commissioners directed the county attorney to try and get the company's permit legally revoked.

Commissioners say the Dan A. Hughes Company was deceptive when it conducted unauthorized fracking-like activities at the well.  The Florida Department of Environmental Protection recently fined the company $25-thousand for the activities.  The FDEP also required the company to hire an expert to monitor the groundwater.  But, commissioners said its not appropriate for company workers to essentially monitor themselves.  Now, they're asking for better communication with the FDEP and more oversight, too.

"This needed to be done at a county level," said Jennifer Hecker with the Conservancy of Southwest Florida.  "The state has not been aggressive enough in providing adequate oversight of these activities to protect Collier County citizens and our water supply."

Collier Commissioners also directed staff to contact state legislators for help.
