BONITA SPRINGS, Fla.- Lee County is spending one million dollars of your money to find a solution to traffic troubles at one intersection! We're talking about Bonita Beach Road and U.S. 41, but the study is creating controversy before it even starts! Some in the area say they want it, others say don't do it!We uncovered why the county is spending the money in the first place.

Bonita Beach Road and U.S. 41 is one of the busiest intersections in Southwest Florida. F-DOT tells WINK News, everyday an average of over 40,000 cars travel down U.S. 41.

"It's a hazard for time, for accidents, and so forth. It's the light everyone wonders what is going to happen as they approach it," said Bill Zawko.

This traffic study is going to look at a few different options. Things, such as a flyover, a roundabout, and multiple turn lanes are on the table, but the flyover has many people concerned.

"Many people are seasonal here, I feel they will get lost, not see the strip malls or local businesses in the area," said Chris Lingenfelter.

So that's the reason to look at all the options and not just a flyover.

"It's the place where you say, 'Oh my gosh, I am going to be waiting at this light.' You know the traffic is a mess."

Others say the traffic flow is normal and they'd like to see things stay as is.

"If anything it's good to have the intersection there, people are stopping and they are able to see what's around them."

The 18-month, one million dollar study is to see if anything, can be done to help with the gridlock.

"It's about the people in the future. What are we going to do? What kind of mess are we going to leave for the people in the future?" said Bonita Springs Mayor, Ben Nelson.

The results will help shape the future of the area. It's also allows the project to be eligible for future funding.

"You saw how crowded it is right now, picture it 20 years from now, what will it be like?" said Nelson.

Now, F-DOT says public comment is important to this study. They are in the process of putting together a website that will have meeting dates, so you can come out and voice your opinion.
