CAPE CORAL, Fla. - It's your money, and more than $100,000 of it has been spent on former Cape Coral Mayor John Sullivan's fight to get his job back.

WINK News is learning the city and county combined have spent $110,000 of taxpayer money.

Despite losing the election, Sullivan believed there were enough votes to make him mayor again. A judge disagreed, and now Sullivan has filed another appeal saying he should not be responsible for paying that money back.

"My wish has always been for him to go out graciously.  This isn't what I wanted for his legacy. It's upsetting when you think about how close we are, how tight we are on our budget right now. Former mayor Sullivan knew that," said Cape Coral Mayor Marni Sawicki.

Mayor Sawicki paid tens of thousands of dollars out of her pocket to defend herself. Sullivan is also responsible for paying that money back.

His new appeal could take more than a year.
