CAPE CORAL, Fla.- The Cape Coral Fire Department extinguished a condominium fire at 3720 South Shore Drive inside Burnt Store Marina this afternoon.

Just before 2:30 p.m., two maintenance workers in the complex heard the fire alarm going off and upon investigating smelled smoke and witnessed smoke coming from apartment 72-A.

Firefighters made entry into the first floor apartment and found heavy black smoke inside. Ventilation fanswere used to help reduce temperatures and enhance visibility, allowing the fire to be quickly extinguished.

The residents, who are seasonal, were not at home at the time of the fire, but returned shortly after firefighters had arrived and extinguished the blaze.

Preliminary indications are that the fire originated in the living room of the apartment, according to the Cape Coral Fire Department. The fire is considered accidental, but remains under investigation.

The fire has been ruled accidental, due to an unknown electronic device that was placed on the left side of couch in the living room. Evidence at the scene indicated the fire originated in and around the living room couch.

Due to the significant damage done by the fire, the electricity was shut off and the residents were relocated. Damage was estimated at $200,000 to the apartment and $7,000 for contents.
