COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. - A Naples mother is in a new house thanks to Habitat for Humanity, but that's not all the family has to be thankful for.
Diana Buchheit was completely surprised when she walked into her new home Friday morning. She said "when I opened up the door it was like I'm dreaming, this isn't really happening."
The single mother of 2 young boys with special needs closed on her house Friday. But little did she know a group of winter visitors from Canada spent Thursday furnishing and decorating every room.
David Stiller said, "when we see the emotional response, it just triggers whatever it is in ones soul." He said,"that says yea we got it right this time so it was quite emotional for us all."
The group partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Collier County to find the best candidate so they could pay it forward. "We've helped turn a house into a home" said Stiller. "We've fallen in love with this little lady, visited her in her former home and realized that there was a lot that could be done" he said.
Lisa Lefkow is the Executive Vice President for Habitat for Humanity of Collier County. She said "when a group like this steps forward and really completes the package for a homeowner, a new homeowner, like diana" it's the icing on a cake.
Diana was living in an apartment complex where there was a recent stabbing, because of that, she wouldn't let her kids play outside or stay out after dark. Now they have a playground across the street and a back yard that will soon be fenced in. Diana said"where we are living at now, we didn't have that, there was no place for the kids to roam and be kids with what they wanted to do so this is pretty awesome."
Diana tells WINK News it's like she's been awaken from a bad nightmare. She said words can't describe how she feels about the help that's been given to her family. "You guys have touched me in a way that I cant even explain. And this is wonderful thank you and I love you guys so much" she said.
