LEHIGH ACRES, Fla.- The Fort Myers Police Department said that road rage is to blame for a shooting that left two people injured near the area of Lee Boulevard and State Road 82 this morning.
Two victims, later identified as David Pineda and Leah Rodriguez, drove themselves to Lehigh Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Both have been released. The man told our reporter at the hospital that he had been shot in the foot.
According to FMPD, the victims were traveling on Leonard Boulevard when an altercation occurred between them and the occupants of a blue Chevy Malibu. The Malibu continued to follow the victims' vehicle into the City of Fort Myers. Once near the intersection of Lee Boulevard and SR 82, the victims pulled over in an attempt to escape the suspects.
The occupants of the Malibu pulled up to the victim’s vehicle where more words were exchanged. At that point, an occupant in the Malibu fired several rounds into the victim’s vehicle, striking both victims. The suspect vehicle fled the scene and the victims drove themselves to the hospital. Both victims suffered non-life threatening injuries.
More than 20 law enforcement vehicles, from FMPD and the Lee County Sheriff's Office, were in the area of Lee Boulevard and State Road 82, gathering evidence this morning.
Deputies surrounded a navy blue vehicle at Evans Ave. and MLK shortly afterward, that matched the description of the suspect vehicle. The driver was questioned, but FMPD does not believe she was involved.
Police are currently looking for Blue 2008-2012 model year Chevy Malibu. The vehicle was occupied by four African American males.
