TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Two sisters were hit by a car as they crossed a road on their way to school.

Tampa police say the girls, ages 14 and 15, were not in the crosswalk as they crossed Hillsborough Avenue early Tuesday morning.

Spokeswoman Andrea Davis says the road was dark and the driver didn't see the girls, who were on their way to Middleton High School.

Officials say one girl is in critical condition and the other is in stable condition.

Police say the driver was on her way to Hillsborough High School. She wasn't injured and police say it doesn't appear she was at fault.
