LEE COUNTY, Fla.- Ramon Almengo is charged with conspiracy to commit fraud, by cashing tax refund checks, based on illegal tax returns.  The U.S. Dept. of Justice says Almengo is charged with cashing 250 checks worth more than $1.8 million.

The government says Almengo cashed checks based on returns, using information stolen from people in Puerto Rico.  The criminal complaint says Almengo cashed the checks at a grocery store near Winkler and Metro in Fort Myers, and at a business he used to have in a shopping plaza on Palm Beach Blvd., east of Fort Myers.

Almengo has appeared in federal court on the charge, and he has posted $100,000 bond to get out of jail.   His defense attorney will not comment on the case.

WINK News went to the grocery store, in search of Almengo.  A man who would not give his name told a news crew to leave the premises, adding that Almengo did not want to do any interviews on the case.
