LEE COUNTY, Fla.- The Florida Highway Patrol arrested 56-year-old Charles Lawson around noon today, when he turned himself in, for leaving the scene of a crash with death on Christmas of 2013.

The crash killed 48-year-old Michael Sasen.

Troopers pulled Lawson over down the street from the crash scene on McGregor Boulevard, near Kasamada Drive, on the day of the accident. They said he had damage to his vehicle that was consistent with the hit and run crash. Lawson was then taken into custody for driving under the influence, but was only named a suspect in the crash.

The State Attorney's Office said Lawson was in his company-issued vehicle at the time of the crash. He was a State Attorney's Office investigator at the time, but he resigned in January. Lawson worked as an investigator with the State Attorney's Office for nine and a half years. Prior to that, he worked at Fort Myers Police Department for 25 years.

WINK News spoke exclusively with Sasen's family about his life in an interview just after his death.
