LEE COUNTY, Fla. - A leisurely bike ride takes a dangerous turn when a woman is hit by a car. Deputies are looking for the driver who slammed into the woman and sped off.

It happened Sunday just after 8pm on San Carlos Boulevard and Pine Ridge Road on the way to Fort Myers beach.

Only WINK News was there as investigators talked to witnesses and checked out the damaged bike.

Tom Backer was riding with the woman at time. He said the whole thing was pretty frightening. Backer said, "she's my best friend and the guy just took her out."

He said the two of them were riding back from the beach when she was hit. Backer said "the guy could have killed her."

According to Backer and other witnesses on scene, the driver took off through the parking lot of the Beach Outlet store afterwards.

One man, who wished not to be identified, told WINK News he chased down the pick-up truck and was able to get a license plate number. He then gave that information to a deputy.

LCSO said the woman doesn't have serious injuries. She was taken by ambulance to Gulf Coast Medical Center.

"Luckily she's going to be fine" said Backer."She may have some broken bone or something, but other than that she's just fine," he said.

The hit and run remains under investigation.
