CAPE CORAL, Fla. - An older male driver was rescued by firefighters last night, after the vehicle he crashing his car into a Cape Coral canal.

Just before 11:15 p.m. on Sunday, Cape Coral firefighters responded to SE 10 Avenue and SE 14 Terrace, after a caller reported to 911 that a vehicle crashed into the canal and there was a man calling for help.

A Cape Coral Police Officer found the man sitting on the roof of the vehicle, which was completely submerged. He was assisted to the seawall and helped up a ladder placed by firefighters.

The man said he wasn't injured, but was checked over by paramedics as a precaution.

Police confirmed that the driver was taken into custody on suspicion of Driving Under the Influence.
