FORT MYERS, Fla.- On March 8, 2014 at 11:54 p.m. the Fort Myers Police Department was dispatched to the intersection of Blount Street and High Street in reference to a male armed with a firearm. 

The first officer to arrive on scene encountered 23-year-old Raul Chavarria, who was armed. Officers say Chavarria pointed a firearm at the officer, who immediately took cover from the deadly threat. Chavarria then ran behind the residence at 1910 High Street. 

The next arriving officer observed a male, later identified as 18-year-old Luis Sanchez exit a green vehicle in the driveway of 1910 High Street. Sanchez was also armed with a firearm, and he pointed it at the officer.

Due to the threat, the officer discharged their firearm. Sanchez was not struck. Officers say Sanchez fled on foot towards 2909 Blount Street. A perimeter was established and both Sanchez and Chavarria were located along with a firearm. No one was injured during the incident.

Sanchez and Chavarria each face aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer charges and resisting an officer without violence. 

Chavarria was additionally charged with providing a false name to law enforcement after it was discovered he gave false information at the onset of the investigation.
