LEE COUNTY, Fla.- Lee County Sheriff's deputies confiscated a handgun from a student at Alva Middle School and arrested two young teens today.
According to Lynn Edward, Principal of Alva Middle, an unloaded 9 mm handgun was brought to school by a student. At no time was the unloaded weapon used by this student, or were other students endangered with it, but the presence of this item was considered a serious violation of the school's code of conduct and a criminal offense.
Edward said, in a written statement, "Discipline will proceed as outlined within student code of conduct and law enforcement will continue their investigation."
The Lee County Sheriff's Office said students reported seeing another student displaying a handgun on a school bus, on the way to Alva Middle. Deputies immediately located the student who was in possession of the handgun while on the bus. He and another student were questioned about the incident.
Youth Services Detectives learned that both students, 13 and 14 years of age, had possessed the gun while on the school bus. One of the students then put the gun into the garbage can in the boy’s restroom.
Both students were arrested for possession of a firearm on school grounds.
The investigation is ongoing and further charges may be forthcoming.
