CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. -- Wednesday we'll see the start of something that's been four years in the making for Charlotte County. Governor Rick Scott will be in Punta Gorda to mark the groundbreaking of a new Cheney Brother's Distribution Center.
It's located just across from the Punta Gorda Airport.
This new distribution center is bringing jobs to Punta Gorda, an estimated 380 jobs paying around $36,000 a year, according to previous releases from Governor Scott's office.
Cheney Brothers is the leading food distributor serving the southeast. Right now, there's a distribution area in West Palm Beach.
Cheney Brothers tells WINK News, the center in Punta Gorda will look pretty similar, and its got Charlotte County Commissioners very excited.
"I can't wait to have this kind of facility in Charlotte County. So many people in Charlotte County are so excited about it and now i know why," said Charlotte County Commissioner Tricia Duffy.
As part of the deal, Cheney Brothers will not pay property taxes to Charlotte County for ten years. This is part of an incentive for the company to fulfill staffing promises.
Construction on the $340,000 square foot project will cost an estimated $40 million. The Distribution Center will handle over 15,000 different items, products such as food, paper, and cleaning supplies.
