NORTH PORT, Fla. - WINK News is learning an incident over the weekend has prompted an internal investigation at the North Port Police Department.

The Police Chief tells WINK News two of his officers are on paid administrative leave until investigators get answers.

Two officers here are at the center of an internal affairs investigation launched by Chief Kevin Vespia.

"I understand the rumors and the speculation but right now it's all speculation until we get the facts of the case," says Chief Kevin Vespia.

Chief Vespia could not go into detail but says he received information that those officers might have committed misconduct over the weekend.  He says there may be criminal implications.

"I asked for the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office to assist us with the criminal investigation. Reason for that is our policy dictates that and also it kind of replaces any concern about any bias or perception of bias," he adds.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office would not comment on the case.  But Chief Vespia says both agencies are working hard to get answers and take whatever action is necessary.

"We follow a set of core values that we believe in.  Unfortunately, sometimes there's allegations made that contradict those core values and this is the result...  just like the public wants to know we would like to know also what happened," he says.

Less than two years ago, another North Port Police Officer was the subject of a criminal investigation.  He was terminated after his arrest for a domestic violence incident.
