LEHIGH ACRES, FL - Lee county Sheriff's deputy Gus Vallejo and his K9 partner Bala were on patrol in Lehigh Acres on Sunday when the deputy says he witnessed two men acting suspiciously. The deputy reported the men were dressed in dark clothes and looking in parked cars. When deputy Vallejo approached the men one ran, but Marquis Bryant allegedly engaged the deputy and a struggle ensued. During the fight, the deputy says Bryant choked him and tried to reach for the deputy's gun. That is when the deputy pressed a button on his belt, the "BAIL OUT" system opens the back door of the patrol vehicle, releasing Bala. The dog "apprehended the suspect on his right thigh", the report says. After Bryant was cuffed, the deputy also allegedly found a revolver in the man's pocket. Bryant, a former standout football player on the Dunbar High School squad, is now behind bars, with no bond.
