LEE COUNTY, Fla.- The woman caught on camera stealing a cell phone and then using her baby to hide the theft, has turned herself in.
Esmeralda Espinosa, 22, turned herself into the Lee County Jail this afternoon. She has been charged with grand theft, as well as an additional outstanding bench warrant from 2011 for failing to show up in court on another theft case. Upon speaking with a detective from the Lee County Sheriff's Office, Espinosa allegedly gave a full confession to her role in the crime.
The victim was shopping at Once Upon a Child, located at 11800 S. Cleveland Avenue, around noon last Thursday. After paying for her purchases, she left the store, leaving her phone behind. Within seconds, Espinosa was seen on surveillance sliding over to the cart, picking up the phone and tucking it behind the baby, then covering it up with a blanket.
When the phone's rightful owner came back into the store moments later to retrieve her phone, it was already gone.
