NAPLES, Fla. - Francis Smith turned 106 years old and kicked off the party at the gym, one of his favorite spots.
Ken Small, Manager of Planet Fitness, said, "He's been a member here since 2008, an inspiration."
Smith said at the age of 100, his doctors insisted he started working out to keep him young.
He said he works out two to three times a week for an hour. During that time he does circuit training by himself. He said he doesn't have a favorite machine. Smith said, "There are ten machines in there and each one is for a different part of the body."
Small said, "He's able to do the workouts consistently all the time. He obviously takes great care of himself and it shows."
But on Friday, he got a pass. With his 79-year-old wife by his side, Smith blew out the candles to his cake and got fed plenty of well wishes.
Small said members are excited to have him around.
"When new people sign up they always ask about him. Who is he? He's here all the time, and everyone just gravitates towards him," said Small.
WINK News asked Smith what's his advice for life of longevity. He said, "The most important thing is to take each day as it comes. Enjoy it. Don't fight it."
Smith hadn't been able to work out for the past couple weeks, due to an unknown incident. But he said he misses it and can't wait to start working out again soon.
