COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.- Environmental advocacy groups took their case in front of a judge, to keep a Texas-based oil company from drilling in Collier County.

As of now, the Dan A. Hughes company is permitted to drill an exploratory well in the area of 24th Avenue SE and Desoto Boulevard in Golden Gate Estates. But that could change.

The fight has been going on for months, and those who want to keep Dan A. Hughes from drilling said they think they'll win soon.

Officials from the Texas-based company, including its Vice President of Land and Operations Manager, testified. They took questions from the South Florida Wildlands Association and Preserve Our Paradise, as well gave their own representation, detailing the roughly two-months of round-the-clock drilling.

It came up that Hughes did not attempt to contact nearby landowners prior to making its plan to drill. Hughes also did not want to comment on a contingency plan, if a spill were to take place.

Hughes declined WINK News' request for comment.

The hearing is expected to continue at least through this Thursday.
