CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - A Clearwater man used his hands, a box cutter and a sledgehammer to kill his mother while his 7-year-old daughter was in the house Monday, authorities said.
Matthew Edward Lohoski "used a variety of weapons" to kill his mother, Deborah Susan Lohoski, Clearwater Police Spokesman Rob Shaw said in a news release Tuesday.
Lohoski choked his mother until she was unconscious, left her outside and went to check on his daughter, making sure she was playing video games in another room, according to the news release.
He returned to his mother and found her still breathing, Shaw said.
"It was then he used a pocket-style box cutter to cut her throat and her armpit area, where he was attempting to sever an artery," Shaw wrote in the news release.
Lohoski then went to check on his daughter again, officials said.
When he returned to his mother, he tried choking her with a zip tie, then hit her in the head three times, Shaw said.
Deborah Lohoski's body was found in the backyard of the house.
Authorities said Lohoski dropped his daughter at a friend's house before driving to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, where he told an officer that he had just killed his mother. Sheriff's deputies called Clearwater police to investigate.
Lohoski was being held Tuesday at the Pinellas County Jail on a charge of first-degree murder. Jail records did not show whether he had an attorney.
