FORT MYERS, Fla. - As the FGCU Eagles gear up for what fans hope is another run in March Madness, who can forget last year's unprecedented season?  The Eagles soared into the history books as the first 15 seed to break into the Sweet 16.

Along the way, FGCU men's hoops picked up a new moniker for the university and Fort Myers: "Dunk City."

But how, exactly, did the name originate, and then spread so quickly?

Sports website "Grantland" did some digging and found Twitter played an enormous role.

In a 30-minute period during last year's game between FGCU and Georgetown, Twitter began to flicker with the phrase "Dunk City."  It was when the official Twitter account for Florida Gulf Coast University laid claim to the title, that it really took off and stuck, gaining hundreds of likes, and nearly 1,800 retweets.

As they say, the rest is history.
