PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.- Charlotte County has dedicated a portion Veterans Blvd. to Sgt. Michael Wilson, six months after he was killed responding to a domestic violence call.

On Wednesday, County officials, Sheriff’s Office representatives, members of Sgt. Wilson’s family and others gathered to dedicate a portion of the road to the memory of Sgt. Wilson. He was fatally shot on August 5, 2013, while responding to a call at the Lakes of Tuscana Apartments, which is located along the dedicated portion of Veterans Blvd.

“Sgt. Wilson gave his life for others and as a small tribute for his gracious sacrifice, we dedicate this portion of Veteran’s Blvd. in his memory,” said County Commissioner Bill Truex. “Mike, Joanne, Brandon, Tyler and Emily, we are forever in your debt and, on behalf of all residents of our community, I offer my prayers and my gratitude.”

The signs, which were made by the County Signing and Marking Division, have been posted in the median in the area of Veterans Blvd. and Atwater Street for eastbound traffic and at Veterans Blvd and Dale Way, just north of Peachland Blvd., for north/west bound traffic.

“Members of the Sheriff’s Office will always remember Sgt. Wilson,” Sheriff Bill Prummell said. “Hopefully members of the public, when they drive by these signs, will remember the sacrifices made for them by public safety employees like Mike.”
