PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Students were evacuated and sent home Thursday after smoke started in the attic of Charlotte Academy Thursday morning.

Firefighters got a call for smoke in the building at the school on Orlando Boulevard in Port Charlotte.  They determined it was coming from a heating and air-conditioning system over one of the classrooms.

"The classroom that is was over quickly filled up with smoke, we were able to get all the students out without and danger, we evacuated the school very quickly,' says Craig Olson, the Head of School.

School leaders say things are expected to be back to normal by Friday morning.
