FORT MYERS, Fla.- Friends will come together Saturday night at Club Blu in Fort Myers to remember 17-year-old Alexis Wilson, shot and killed in Fort Myers over the weekend.
The event will raise money for her family to pay for funeral costs. It's open to anyone 15 and up and begins at 9 p.m. Saturday at the club off Evans Avenue.
On Monday, police arrested 19-year-old James Brown for her murder.
WINK News spoke exclusively with Jenery Colon, who is helping to organize Saturday night's event.
She says, "I was very heartbroken. Me, as a mother, I wouldn't want to go through that. No mother should, no mother should bury her children. She was very free-spirited. She loved to dance. Alexis was a good daughter, a great sister and an amazing friend. The most they would remember her by is how free-spirited she was."
After news of her death, Colon says she wanted to do something to support her family. "We as a community should stick together in times of need. So an event will be held here at Club Blu on Saturday to honor her life. All proceeds that are made will go to her mother to help with her final burial arrangements. A parent shouldn't have to bury her child. And it hurts me to my heart. So out of the kindness of my heart, I want to help her family. I can't put myself in her shoes. It's just senseless. She died in a senseless way. And it's hurtful to a lot of people who loved her," she said.
WINK News has also learned detectives used cell phone records to track down Brown, after he was identified as the suspect.
