MANATEE COUNTY, Fla.- A Naples teen was killed in an accident on southbound I-75 near Sarasota yesterday evening. Two other Southwest Florida teens were transported to Blake Medical Center in serious condition.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Mikayla Brandt, 19, died on the scene. It is unknown whether she was wearing her seat belt.

It happened on I-75 at SR-70 at 6:20 p.m., when Nicholas Calton, 19, was approaching an overpass that was undergoing emergency construction due to falling concrete. Traffic was stopped just south of SR-70.

Calton was unable to stop in time to avoid collision with two vehicles, and was cited for careless driving. The crash caused all three vehicles to overturn, but the occupants of the other vehicles sustained only minor injuries.

The third occupant of Calton's vehicle, 19-year-old Skylar Rhoden, of Bonita Springs, was wearing her seat belt, but was still seriously injured.
