LEE COUNTY, FL - Abrin, a deadly toxin found in the "rosary pea" plant has the potential to kill in minute amounts according to Lee Memorial Health Systems ER physician, Dr. Timothy Dougherty. The outer shell of the rosary pea looks like a lady bug and is perfectly safe. Many have used the shells to make jewelry. It is the inner seed that contains the deadly poison. Dr. Dougherty says the poison kills any cells it comes in contact with. Even in small doses Abrin can kill in a matter of days and there is no known cure.
