GOLDEN GATE ESTATES, Fla.- Two horses are recovering after being viciously attacked by three pit bulls. A neighbor shot and killed the dogs.

"I think it was pretty apparent these dogs were trying to kill the horse."

Just two days after a horrific attack, Luna and April are bandaged up and on the mend after three pit bulls mauled them.

"It's always sad to see an injured animal, especially when it is un-needless violence like this," said Daniel Christenbury with Collier County Domestic Animal Services.

WINK News was able to obtain photos that show just how severe the horses injuries are.

"These dogs could have very well killed these horses, and if they hadn't been caught they could have gone to someone else's livestock and killed them," said Christenbury.

Luna and April both have chewed up legs, Luna also had a chunk bitten out of her neck and an injury to her eye.

"To see these animals injured like this it's heart breaking, the dogs included, because this could have been prevented."

On Wednesday morning, an off-duty Collier County civilian service deputy heard the horses cry for help and after a failed attempt to reach the horses' owner, he made the quick decision to shoot the dogs.

"He was well within his rights to kill these three dogs to protect the lives of the livestock in danger."

WINK News found out, the dogs traveled a mile from their home on 22nd Avenue NE to reach the horses.

"If these dogs were kept on their property on a leash or overseen by owners, this wouldn't have happened, these dogs would be alive and these horses wouldn't be injured like they are."

The dog owner was cited for three counts of allowing her dogs to run at large and three counts of trespassing with damage.
