FORT MYERS, FL.--A heartbreaking WINK News exclusive--pain and anger for the parents of a lee county woman who was raped and murdered almost a year ago.
WINK News had team coverage last January when the body of 22-year-old Darla Miller was uncovered in Bonita Springs.
U.S. Marshals eventually caught the alleged killer-- Robert Toribio senior-- more than a thousand miles away in New York.
"It hurts, just miss her," said Denise Miller.
It's been almost a year and Denise and Dean Miller still remember the day they got the news that their loving, energetic daughter was never coming home.
"The moment that you hear it--its like--it totally flushes over you," said Dean Miller.
Last January, Darla Miller's body was found wrapped in bedsheets down Oakland Drive in Bonita Springs.
Authorities say she had been raped and murdered just days after her 22nd birthday.
"Darla would never hurt anybody the way she was hurt--she never would," said Denise.
Detectives linked DNA evidence to 40-year old Robert Toribio.
He was arrested in New York five months after Darla's body was found.
Authorities say Toribio was released from prison not long before the murder.
Now darla's parents want to make sure he can't hurt anyone else.
"Just want to know that he is getting what he needs to and never leaves prison alive," said Dean Miller.
And perhaps the hardest thing now is re-living the day their daughters life ended too soon.
"When you know what he has done and the horrible things that she suffered--it is very tough to have to go in to the court room and actually re live what you know," said Darla.
