CAPE CORAL, Fla. - The power of social media is providing local jobs. A Cape Coral woman started a Facebook page aimed at getting people back to work. And the page itself is working.
Cape Coral mother Kristi Valentine started thinking about going back to work, and found her job through the Facebook site: SWFL Florida Job Openings.
"It was kind of a shock. Because I was now back in the work force, after being a mom at home for three years," said Valentine.
She's working for Lover's Key Resort, after another member in the group posted about it on the site. "I'm a guest service agent here at the hotel. And it's just a lot of fun," she said.
Carly Allison, also a mother and Cape Coral resident, started the page about a month ago. "Over two days we got 250 likes on our fanpage, close to it, and 100 more people in our Facebook group," she said.
She's doing this all on her own time. Every day, she searches for job openings, calls and verifies them, then posts them to the group. The reason behind it, is very personal.
"A few years ago my husband lost his job. And that was really a rough time for us. It was very stressful. If we would have had this, you know it would have been a lot easier to get back on our feet," Allison said.
She estimates she's posted hundreds of openings already, and they cater to people of all ages and all professions. For example telling people the Golden Corral in Cape Coral is hiring, or letting them know about Hertz opportunities.
"I know there are so many jobs out there, you know. People need work. And there's jobs available. I just want to make sure they can find each other," Allison said.
She is already getting calls from businesses asking how they can promote their openings on her site. She says, right now, she's doing this all for free. But one day, hopes to turn it into a business, and start hiring people, herself.
