PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - A Charlotte County man is in a Tampa hospital tonight after being rescued from a burning trailer.

Firefighters and EMS responded to the fire early this morning on the 11,000 block of Tamiami Trail in Punta Gorda.

Wink News spoke to his friends and neighbors who say their thoughts and prayers are with him and hope he pulls through.

Charred walls, burnt furniture and ash are all that remain of this Punta Gorda mobile home in Pelican Perch RV Park off US-41.

"It 's totaled out. That's what I'm saying. It's all done," said park owner William Figel.

Fire officials, responded to a call just after 5:30 Saturday morning. There they discovered a 62-year old man unconscious inside the burning trailer.

"Very nice guy. He just moved in he's been here about a month," said Figel.

First responders quickly pulled him to safety and paramedics treated the patient on scene before flying him to Tampa General Hospital with life threatening injuries.

"From the waist up he's burned. First, second, and third degrees," said a longtime friend.

Neighbor Andrew Iannone says he was awake in the early morning hours, heard the sirens and ran outside.

"Looked out my window I see the smoke coming out right over there and flames were shooting out the windows and everything," he said.

Friends are shocked and say the victim is a disabled vet who was recovering after recently being hit by a car while riding his bike.

"He was down on his luck and when he got his settlement and everything he helped every one out in need.

He paid back everyone and he even looked for people just to help them out," said friend Robin Taylor.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the state fire marshals.
