CAPE CORAL, FL - Cape Coral police detectives were in the process of arresting a woman at 3905 SE 4 Avenue, for allegedly stealing presents off of neighbor's porches when they hear a commotion further down the street. When the look to the street they see a white pickup dragging a man alongside it. According to Detective Sargeant Dana Coston, the detectives identified themselves and tried to get the driver to stop. Coston says instead of stopping the driver accelerated toward the detectives, who, fearing for their lives, opened fire. The driver of the pickup, David Westerman, was hit in the arm and later taken to Lee Memorial hospital for treatment. The man being dragged was not injured. Police say when Westerman is released from the hospital, he will be arrested and charged with aggravated battery for dragging the man and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer for driving at the detective.
