PUNTA GORDA, Fla.- Early Sunday morning, Charlotte County Sheriff's deputies escorted an airplane from the Punta Gorda Airport to the Shell Creek Airport on Washington Loop Road.

Arrangements were made for deputies to escort the World War II era twin-engine plane to the air strip along Shell Creek to be refurbished.

Both the pilot and co-pilot who originally flew the plane on June 6, 1944, are still alive and are scheduled to participate in the remembrance events in 2014 in England, according to the sheriff's office.

However, getting the plane from the Punta Gorda Airport to the Shell Creek Airport took some work. The move began around 7:00 a.m. Sunday and required some coordination between several additional deputies as well as members of Charlotte County Fire/EMS. By about 9:00 a.m., the plane was safely at the Shell Creek location.
