NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. (AP) - A Tampa Bay-area man has been sentenced to death for the murder and rape of a 94-year-old woman.
In delivering the sentence against John Sexton Jr., Circuit Judge Mary Handsel called the murder of Ann Parlato a "senseless, pitiless" crime.
Sexton was convicted by a jury that recommended the death penalty in April.
Parlato's body was found by a friend at her New Port Richey home. She had been raped and viciously beaten. Her body was mutilated and set on fire.
Police have said Sexton was Parlato's lawn man. Parlato's DNA was later found under his fingernails and cuticles.
Neighbors also testified seeing him through Parlato's kitchen window the night of the crime.
