NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. - WINK News is breaking new details in a North Fort Myers death investigation that's turned homicide investigation. We're learning more about the victim, 61-year-old Kurt Nusbaum. Lee County deputies say he was found dead Wednesday in his West Mariana Avenue home off of U.S. 41 and Pine Island Road. His car had also been stolen.
Nusbaum's family is stunned by the news. It's a mystery at this point. They tell me, they aren't speaking publicly about Kurt's death until they know more. Neighbors tell WINK News that everyone loved him and can't understand who would want to hurt him.
"Wonderful. He'd do anything in the world for you.," Larry Zeglis said.
"He's really a nice guy and I hate to see anything happen to him like that," Frank Dampier said.
Wednesday, neighbors found the 61-year-old dead inside his home. His truck was gone, too.
"A guy who was helping him now and then, he came over and said the gate's unlocked. Something is wrong. Let's go," Zeglis said. "I went over and the house is unlocked. He found him and then he showed me. Yeah, bad."
Lee County Sheriff's investigators later found Nusbaum's 2004 white Ford Expedition abandoned on I-75 southbound near the Colonial Boulevard exit, but no sign of who was driving.
We're learning more about the Nusbaum's life. According to his personal website, he worked in hotel and restaurant administration for three decades and was "devoted to the betterment of his own community." It also says he was a member of the Lee Memorial Blood Bank, the German-American Club and North Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce.
"Always smiling," Mark Thomas said. "Always out and about, doing stuff in his yard, taking care of his goats. Never had nothing like that happen so close. He's just such a nice guy. It's too bad it happened."
Detectives are now asking for your help. If you know anything about Nusbaum's truck or know someone who was given a ride or was seen around that vehicle, call the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
