FORT MYERS, Fla.- After 19 months of construction, we're getting our first look inside Fort Myers' brand new, state-of-the art public library. WINK News was there for a sneak preview before the doors opened to the public.
It's a new chapter for Lee County libraries. They're changing with the times: getting bigger, better and more tech-savvy. The new facility is triple the size of the old one, and the Fort Myers Regional Library has something for readers of all ages.
From large-screen monitors, to DVD's, e-readers and digital books, technology is the name of the game at this library.
For paperback purists, shelves are still stocked with everything from best sellers to the classics, with even easier ways to take your favorites home. The new facility has six self-checkout stations, and a special holds section for quick pick-ups. Kids have their own nook inside the library, with safe internet access and programs to keep them reading at home.
Spanning more than three acres across downtown Fort Myers, part of the facility holds an outdoor reading deck, including an ampitheater and public plazas.
The library is now open, but the official ribbon cutting will be Friday, January 10th at 10:00 a.m. The grand opening is the next day, January 11th, featuring live music, local authors, storytelling and plenty of fun for the whole family.
Parking:Limited parking is available on site. Initially, on-site parking will be free; meters will be installed to be consistent with the metered parking in the area. Surrounding downtown parking is also available. Additionally the River District Trolley provides free seasonal service to the downtown area. The trolley will stop on every corner along First Street between Monroe and Fowler. Passengers can hop on and off the Trolley as often as they like and never pay a fare. The River District Trolley runs every 20-30 minutes from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
