LEE COUNTY, Fla - Local realtors tell WINK News they're dealing with a serious case of fraud when it comes to listing homes for sale.
If you're in the market for a new place, buyer beware.
A home on Hansen Street in Fort Myers is listed by realtor Mike Reeves for $83,000. "I've had two individuals call me that have found that property on Craig's list for rent for $550/month. That house is not for rent," says Reeves.
The listing has since been taken off Craigslist but Reeves says it's part of a scam that keeps popping up.
"We report it. It will go off Craigslist and then it will come back on and you can't stop it," says Reeves.
Cape Coral police says crooks are using information from real listings, and then creating a fake for rent as on places like Craigslist or Zillow.
"You can email them, you can talk to them, but they won't meet you. They can't get in the house, they won't show you the house," says Reeves.
Police say the scammers use deals that sound too good to be true. They then ask you to wire money in exchange for the keys.
"You need to verify," says Reeves. "Be careful of what you're doing. Look at all the sources you can look at."
Reeves says if you see a listing on Craigslist do an MLS search and see if it's legit. Also, never wire money to a stranger. And finally, ask to see the property first, before even thinking about sending any money.
