LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- An Orlando man is out of Lee Memorial Hospital, and now behind bars in the Lee County Jail. Florida Highway Patrol says Shannon Mitchell, 27, was involved in a deadly crash November 6th, at US 41 and Sanibel Boulevard, after he fled a traffic stop.
Just before 3:00pm, a Florida Highway Trooper tried to stop Mitchell for illegally tinted windows, but he fled northbound on US 41. Moments later, FHP says he lost control, crossing over the raised median of US 41, and overturned onto the southbound lanes, while slamming into a Toyota Tacoma.
FHP said 40-year-old Kyla Nesmith, a passenger in Mitchell's Chevrolet Cavalier was pronounced dead on the scene. Mitchell was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
The driver of the Toyota Tacoma, Paul Jenkins, 42, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Gulf Coast Hospital.
FHP says Michell was in possession of cocaine, and driving with a suspended license.
