LEE COUNTY, Fla.- The Lee County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal accident involving a pedestrian Saturday night.
Deputies say around 9:30 p.m., they received a call about a vehicle versus pedestrian crash located near the intersection of North Cleveland Avenue and Hancock Bridge Parkway.
Deputies responded to the scene. Due to the nature of the incident, deputies with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit were assigned to continue the investigation.
Upon arrival deputies discovered the pedestrian was struck by a driver of a 2002 Chevrolet Envoy as he attempted to cross the street. The pedestrian was later identified as 54-year-old Kevin Richard Roberts. Roberts was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead as result of his injuries.
Preliminary information reveals the driver of the Chevrolet Envoy was traveling northbound on Cleveland Avenue approaching the intersection of Hancock Bridge Parkway. Deputies say Roberts proceeded to cross Cleveland Avenue from a west to east direction in an area not designed for pedestrian traffic. As Roberts attempted to dodge other northbound vehicles, he ran into the path of the Envoy and he was struck.
Roberts was found at fault for the crash and alcohol may have been a factor.
The Driver of the Chevrolet Envoy was not in injured and will not be facing any charges.
