FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Salvation Army kicked off its 2013 Red Kettle campaign Friday morning.

Representatives from the Lee/Hendry/Glades, Charlotte/Desoto, and Collier County offices gathered at Coconut Point mall and announced the collective goal for red kettle donations this season.

That number is $1,185,000, and the organization says that money goes towards its holiday assistance programs -- such as Thanksgiving meals and toys for children -- but it also helps support year-round programs like utility and rent assistance and the weekly food pantry.

The Salvation Army isn't just looking for donations of money. Anyone who would like to donate their time ringing a bell at a red kettle can contact their local Salvation Army office.
