SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) - A Sarasota man is accused of stealing money from his mother to fund his drug addiction.
The Sarasota Herald-Tribune ( ) reports Michael Dion, 50, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of exploitation of the elderly. They say he took more than $20,000 from his mother, 72.
An arrest reports says that Dion took his mother to the bank on Oct. 17 to withdraw almost $13,000. According to an arrest report, the mother seemed confused, but advised the teller to do what her son asked.
The bank staff noted that one of his mother's certificates of deposit had been withdrawn on Sept. 5, and more than $13,000 was deposited into her bank account. The bank wasn't identified in the report.
According to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, a 90-day review of the woman's banking records found that $600 per day had been withdrawn from her account since Aug. 15, for a total of $22,800.
Dion told deputies he abuses prescription drugs and has developed a $600 a day drug habit. The report says he is unemployed and has no income.
He also told deputies that his mother doesn't understand his addiction due to her "diminished mental state."
He remains in the Sarasota County Jail.
