BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. - A Bonita Springs mother of nine is thanking the community for its support in her battle against breast cancer. Sandy Prawdzik was recently diagnosed and will soon undergo surgery.

Saturday, Prawdzik's children decorated the front yard with pink ribbons and shoppers stopped by for a yard sale to help raise money for her treatment.

Wink News spoke to the mother and her family who say their faith is getting them through a difficult time.

"The tears started coming from her and then of course when I see my mom cry which is not very often at all," said daughter Chrissy Wesley.

It's a day every family dreads.

"A couple weeks ago my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer and it was suggested that she have a double mastectomy," said daughter Lynn Deffet.

"It was a jolt. We cried it out for a good day or two and was then like, okay, what do we need to do," said Deffet.

For the children of the long-time foster parent, they say it's a terrifying diagnosis, affecting the strongest woman they know.

"She's my mom. I don't really consider her my adopted mom. To me, she's the only mom I know," said Wesley.

"After raising me, she adopted eight children and raised them and now she also has two grandchildren that are living with her," said Deffet.

Even with insurance, the surgury will cost several thousand dollars and keep prawdzik away from work for at least eight weeks.

"We wanted to do a yard sale and we're having a spaghetti dinner next Sunday to cover the expenses not covered by insurance," said Deffet.

Saturday, people in the community stopped by the family fundraiser, donating hundreds of dollars and showing their support and giving Sandy the strength to face the long road ahead.

"It's awesome, I never would have expected it," she said.

According to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, every 19 seconds, somewhere around the world, a case of breast cancer is diagnosed among women.

Prawdzik's family is also hosting a spaghetti dinner and auction next Sunday, October 20th, 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the Barefoot Boat Club in Bonita Springs.
