LEE COUNTY, Fla. - October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In recognition of this, you're going to see new billboards around lee county.
The main one is located near the intersection of Colonial Boulevard and Six Mile Cypress.
The message flashes on the screen, and is purchased by Lee County's ACT. This is a special day for the group, because in 35 years, they've never been able to purchase a billboard for a month until now.
The big billboard marks a day in history for Marcie Kaveney and those with the Abuse Counseling and Treatment Center. "We've never done it before, never done anything like this before," she said.
ACT is the domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking center, serving Lee, Hendry and Glades counties.
They started raising money in February though a play. "We did the Vagina Monologues back in February and through that play we were able to raise close to $7,000," she said.
$1,200 went to purchased thE billboard spot through Lamar Advertising. The message on the screen is one of three that you might see.
It should receive about 150,000 views each week. With one in four women affected by domestic violence, Kaveney holds out hope this billboard will encourage change in lives.
"I'm hoping that it triggers them to call us and to seek help. And to find out how to get out of a relationship safely," she said.
Lee County resident Duane White doesn't know anyone personally affected by domestic violence, but he's pleased with the billboard. "I think its a good idea. awareness, as far as I can see you know? It's just a good thing."
It's not the only one you might see. Lamar Advertising gifted ACT five other bonus billboards which will be spread throughout the county.
The message will be up until the end of the month, but ACT is hoping to keep it up year round. In order to do that, they'd need sponsors!
